Renardus Application Profile - Overview

Introduction

This pages will present the results and ongoing processes of the development of the Renardus application profile with all relevant information. This work is done and will be done in the context of workpackage 6 (data model and data flow).
Very early in the discussion of a Renardus data model it was clear, that the data model should be based on Dublin Core as far as possible. Only one Renardus "content" element is neither a DC element nor a DC based element and this is the element "Country". All other elements and qualifiers (element refinements and value encoding schemes) are based on Dublin Core where possible.
In case no encoding scheme or refinement from Dublin Core can be used, the definition is a Renardus qualifier.

The Renardus broker will consist of the content databases (decentral: Z39.50) with the agreed eight elements and two administrative elements as well as the "Collection Level Description" database. The content database will contain the metadata records extracted from the individual Service Providers databases in accordance with the Renardus data model. The Collection Level Description database will contain information on collection description of each subject gateway.

It is also part of Workpackage 6 to develop the Renardus namespaces with a defined Renardus Metadata Element Set (RMES) and Renardus Metadata Element Set Qualifiers (RMES Qualifiers). The final Renardus application profile will be ready in June 2002 (the public deliverable of D6.5).

Renardus Application Profile

The Renardus Application Profile is available at: http://renardus.sub.uni-goettingen.de/renap/renap.html
and consists of at least five namespaces so far:

• rmes: Renardus Metadata Element Set
• rmesq: Renardus Metadata Element Set Qualifiers
• dc1.1: Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, Version 1.1
• dcterms: Other DCMI elements and Dublin Core Qualifiers
• dcmitype: DCMI Type Vocabulary
